Auto Insurance

Auto Insurance

Automobile insurance is the best way to protect yourself, your passengers and your car, truck, or SUV in the event of an accident or destructive weather event. But it isn’t just great protection in case of an accident, it’s also the law. All states (except Virginia and New Hampshire) require automobile insurance in order to protect you and fellow motorists. Coverage requirements will vary based on your financial responsibility for your car and your state’s requirements. Some states even require you to have liability insurance before you can even get a driver’s license.

There are many options to consider when you are choosing the proper vehicle coverage. Coverage could pay for repairs for your own vehicle, should you be involved in an automobile accident or be the victim of a major weather event. It could also pay your medical bills and cover the medical expenses of your passengers and those in the other vehicle. It could pay for a rental car if you’re ever in a collision and need transportation.  Insurance provides protection and will cover your responsibility for any damage you cause to your own property or others. But it is important that you get the proper coverage to fulfill your legal obligations and to protect you and your family’s financial future.

Our agents are happy to assist you in deciding whether or not you only need basic liability coverage or if your unique needs are better served with additional optional coverage that protect against a wider range of possible damage.

Liability

You’ve probably heard a lot about liability insurance but may not understand exactly what it covers. Liability insurance refers to a type of insurance that helps protect you, the insured policy owner,  with protection against claims that might result from injuries or damages to other people or their property. Also included in this coverage are medical expenses, legal fees if you’re held legally responsible for someone else’s injury, or damage to someone else’s property. Drivers are required to carry liability insurance in nearly every state.

Auto liability insurance policies contain insurance for bodily injury, coverage for property damage, as well as uninsured or under-insured motorists coverage.

  1. Bodily injury liability insurance protects you against the claims from other people who might have been injured in an accident where you were at fault.  Bodily injury claims may include costly  medical expenses, lost wages, as well as pain and suffering.
  2. Property damage liability insurance pays for any damage you cause to the property of others. This not only includes damages to other vehicles but also other types of property, such as buildings, walls, fences, and equipment.
  3. Uninsured motorists coverage protects the insured policy holder directly. This type of coverage pays you if you’re injured and/or your property is damaged by a hit-and-run driver or an uninsured driver.
  4. Under-insured coverage pays for your injuries or property damage if the at-fault driver does has coverage, but the limits may not be high enough to cover the full expenses of a claim.

Physical Damage

Physical damage is automobile  coverage that is designed to protect the insured’s own vehicle. The most common types of physical damage insurance are are collision coverage and comprehensive coverage.

Collision coverage helps to pay for repairs or to replace your car if it is damaged in an accident with another vehicle or object. In the case of an accident involving an older make or model of car or any vehicle that sustains extensive damage, the cost of repairing the car can exceed the car’s actual cash value. When this occurs, insurers will “total” the car and you will receive the cash value of the car, minus the deductible, rather than repairing it.

Comprehensive coverage helps pay to replace or repair your vehicle if it’s stolen or it is damaged in an incident that’s not collision related. This insurance covers an array of random events that are outside of your control including a chipped windshield or dents from a hail storm. Other causes include fire, vandalism, flooding, theft, falling objects, and collision with animals. Even if comprehensive coverage is not required in your area, it may be required by your lender.
